Did you know that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concluded that odometer fraud affects more than 450,000 cars each year, milking more than $1billion from car buyers annually? Odometer fraud is a serious crime, and it can render a car unsafe. Protect yourself from odometer fraud by doing the following before you decide to purchase a used car:

Ask to see the title and compare the mileage on it with the car’s odometer.

Compare the mileage on the odometer with the mileage indicated on the car’s maintenance or inspection records. Oil change and maintenance stickers on windows, or door frames, in the glove box, or under the hood may reveal inconsistencies.

Check that the numbers on the odometer gauge are aligned correctly.

Examine the tires. If the odometer shows 20,000 or fewer miles, then the car should have the original tires.

Compare the wear and tear on the car with the mileage, particularly the gas, brake and clutch pedals. Is the wear and tear consistent with the mileage?

Request a CARFAX Vehicle History Report and check for odometer discrepancies.

Feel free to give me a call if you suspect that you are a victim of odometer fraud.
